Tradition and Gospel
Matthew 15:1-3 “Then came to Jesus scribes and Pharisees, which were of Jerusalem, saying, Why do thy disciples transgress the tradition of the elders? for they wash not their hands when they eat bread. But he answered and said unto them, Why do ye also transgress the commandment of God by your tradition?”
Tradition (in some context of definition) is a doctrine; in fact, a search engine defines tradition as ‘a doctrine believed to have divine authority though not in the scriptures, in particular’. This brings a lot to the mind; does tradition struggle with what the scripture says or stand for? Or is it another conflicting factor to what divinity religious beliefs stand on? If tradition is divine, what part is it meant to or not to affect? And several other bothering questions, definitely, the Bible has the answer to everything.
Traditions or doctrines are set up at most times to guide the conducts of a new believer; it is meant to ensure that such a person follows those things that are in the scripture, but what of when tradition becomes a god itself?! The problem the teachers of the law had was that they forsook God and instead followed the law to an extent that even when Jesus, whom the scriptures they claim to believe came, they didn’t recognize Him. Men have taken laws of human hand instead for God’s; it is putting the cart before the horse!
Colossians 2:8 reads “Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ.” This is God’s warning for us; as Christians, the gospel should never be placed below tradition, we should not transgress God’s commandment by traditions of men.

Talk to God: Father, I want to neglect earthly tradition for your commandments alone, teach me to walk in your tradition and affect others with it in Jesus’ name, amen.
