The First Evangelist
Text: Luke 8:27; 32; 38 & 39
“So the man went away and told all over the town how much Jesus had done for him.” Luke 8:39 NIV
Who Was He?
Matthew, Mark, Luke, John or Paul; who would you have thought the first evangelist to be? In the above text, Jesus didn’t make the man a disciple that followed Him around; instead, He commissioned him as an evangelist. The man was possessed of ‘legion’, that is; an army of demons; this was so because the devil knew whom the man was meant to be. At times the devil tie people’s hands with much tighter ropes because of their God given potential, putting a big gap between who they are and who they should be. When the man met Jesus, the ‘legion’ became restless, recognizing what authority the Son of the Most High carry (Verse 28). Immediately, they were certain an end has come to their stay in that temple, they trembled in fear.
Do you know Jesus didn’t send His twelve disciples out until after the first evangelist was commissioned? (Luke 9:1) He called the twelve but sent the man out before them, this shows we don’t have to wait for the ‘called’ men of God to evangelize before us. The Great Commission is ours to fulfill not to watch the pastors or other men of God fulfilling. Verse 39b shows the man told all over his town, have we told to our nearest neighbours that Jesus saves?
